PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: Powerex, Inc., a world leader in semiconductor manufacturing and sales, is seeking a Field Applications Engineer for its Value Added Products business that includes SCRs, HV & LV IGBTs, Diodes, Hybrid and full SiC solutions primarily produced in our production lines in Youngwood, PA. The successful candidate will be responsible for specific Powerex POW-R-PAK™ which is a configurable IGBT based power platform that can be used for quick and easy product feasibility testing, rapid prototyping and design validation. POW-R-PAK systems are suited for energy storage, uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), motor drives, solar, wind, photovoltaics, EV and hybrid electric vehicle applications. The power assembly is mounted on a forced air-cooled heatsink and features state-of-the-art Powerex IGBTs with low conduction and low switching losses for high efficiency operation. The POW-R-PAK includes a low inductance laminated bus structure, optically isolated gate drive interfaces, isolated gate drive power supplies, and a DC-link capacitor bank. The interface board provides simple user connections along with built-in protection features including overvoltage, under voltage lockout, overcurrent, over temperature, and short circuit detection. The role includes discussing and designing applications for operation DC bus voltages; switching frequencies below 20kHz.growth and the analysis of opportunities, providing/overseeing quotations, and interfacing with customers to understand key opportunities and support closing of orders. The candidate will also provide direction to product development team.

Visit, build relationships, and close orders with key customers and suppliers

Becoming the Technical liaison between Powerex device design engineers and development engineers at end customers
Assisting Customers with Device selection and interpreting data sheet technical information and application notes to the customer.
Troubleshooting problems and Failure Analysis
Assess commercial and technical viability
Communicate technical requirements to Powerex design engineers
Present proposed solution(s) to customer
Communicate commercial requirements such as schedule and price to Marketing and Sales
Stimulating Interest in New Products and Technology

Strong technical skills in power products applications including simulation (ex: Ability to produce source code for a customer’s three level application).

Ability to establish reasonable project timetables and the drive to meet them
Ability to review testing instructions and develop improved methods. As an example, a circuit module is used on a locomotive to drive or gate the IGBT switching device to control the Main Generator (MG) field current. Furthermore, the CCM module provides feedback signals to the computer (CPM) and diode protection via crowbar. The FAE will support our supplier and customers understand our product for the purposes of translating pre-existing HB BASIC test code to National Instruments LabWindows CVI, LabVIEW and TestStand , DAQS (Data Analysis Qualification System).
Ability to draft and qualify procedures that use a Microchip programmer/debugger to update boot loader code to support here and at the customer Powerex Gate Board Firmware Updates for the applications Powerex supports. Annually or as needed install the latest Gate Board Firmware Update plan for future firmware updates.
Develop Semiconductor loss calculators using switching data (reverse recovery current/ VF data or switching energy). Ability to develop and understand simulators in the form of an Excel macro written in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), a part of Excel.
Develop spreadsheet modeling tools to help customers estimate the Module /Assembly losses for low power operation and full rated operation conditions. Ability to use CFD software for thermal analysis.
The ability and willingness to travel up to 25% in North America including limited international travel
EDUCATION: Minimum of a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering. Higher level degree will substitute for experience.
EXPERIENCE: 1 year or more experience in the power semiconductor assembly market preferably as a Field Applications Engineer, a desire to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked team environment, and be a self-starter. Software experience /controls/ gate driver development is required
